The title grabs your attention immediately!

"Flirtation Walk"
  By Siri Mitchell

How can you help but be attracted to this title and beautiful cover??? Sounds and looks so romantic! What the reader doesn't realize, is that there are deep thoughts and feelings involved in very complicated situations to solve , in order for the romance to go forth!!

Synopsis:

Trying to escape the shambles her con-man father has made of their reputation, Lucinda Curtis arrives in West Point, New York, determined to land a husband from the military academy. Campbell Conklin is first in his class and preparing to embark upon a storied career in the U.S. Army. Lucinda thinks Campbell will make the perfect husband . . . as long as he does not find out about her father.

Seth Westcott also has taken a liking to Lucinda. He's kind, smart . . . and working extremely hard to graduate last. Tradition states that the worst cadets are assigned to the cavalry out west. And west is where Seth must head to track the swindler who stole all of Seth's mother's money. Seth is smart enough to vie for the top spot, but life isn't fair and this is his chance to catch the man who ruined his family. It's too bad Campbell is all shine and no substance, but Lucinda will surely see through all of that, won't she??

My Thoughts:
I must say, as a reviewer, I often don't choose to review historical fiction or romance novels, as they just aren't my "cup of tea". I know how much other readers love them, but as I often say, it is good for the authors that not all of us have the same tastes in books!! However, having said that, Siri Mitchell has won me over!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!! I was very impressed with Siri's vivid imagination  and her ability to develop her characters that are unique, somewhat quirky and thoroughly likeable. Lucinda, the main character, was easy with whom to identify. She was having such a struggle with her past and her present challenges, making her future appear very bleak. Seth is a character that puzzled me from beginning to the end of the book. He was handsome, kind, intelligent, but honestly did some very stupid things to solve problems. All of the characters were well and realistically described. I DID want to reach out and shake some sense into a few heads!!!

The plot moves steadily toward the goal of the book, to have Lucinda make peace with her past and look forward to the future. The tale is woven well with the historical elements of the time. Although light hearted at some moments, there are some serious, thought provoking events as well. I must admit that I did have some giggles along the way, at some of the unique situations created by the very interesting characters.

I would give this book five stars. Not only a well written novel but one that entertains from beginning to end.

A FANTASTIC Book !! Prince Edward Island is the PERFECT setting!!

           "The Red Door Inn"
               By Liz Johnson

As this author was new to me, I had no idea what to expect when I agreed to review this book. I am always a bit apprehensive when encountering the unknown, but I must say that I had a VERY pleasant experience awaiting me! First of all, the cover was extremely attractive. You immediately want to dig into this story! Secondly, as I live in Canada, a  tale taking place in PEI, the most gorgeous island, grabbed my attention!! I certainly had no disappointments when reading this novel! It simply took my breath away!!

Synopsis: Marie Carrington is running from a host of bad memories. Broke and desperate, she's hoping to find safety and sanctuary on Prince Edward Island, where she reluctantly agrees to help decorate a renovated bed-and-breakfast before it opens for prime tourist season.

Seth Sloane didn't move three thousand miles to work on his uncle's B&B so he could babysit a woman with a taste for expensive antiques and a bewildering habit of jumping every time he brushes past her. He came to help restore the old Victorian--and to forget about the fiancée who broke his heart.

The only thing Marie and Seth agree on is that getting the Red Door Inn ready to open in just three months will take everything they've got. Can these two wounded souls find hope, healing, and perhaps a bit of romance on this beautiful island?

Step into the Red Door Inn, a lovely home away from home tucked along the north shore of fabled Prince Edward Island. It's a place where the wounded come to heal, the broken find forgiveness, and the lonely find a family. Won't you stay for the season?

My Thoughts:

"Step into the Red Door Inn, a lovely home away from home tucked along the fabled north shore of Prince Edward Island. It’s a place where the wounded come to heal, the broken find forgiveness, and the lonely find a family. Won’t you stay for the season?" ~ author Liz Johnson

The setting of this story is described in such vivid detail that you at once feel that you are on this beautiful island, the home of the famous book, "Ann of Green Gables". What a perfect place for a new Bed and Breakfast. My greatest wish was that I could be there alongside the characters to sit by the water and dream.

This book has a strong theme of redemption and  a quest to find healing, throughout the tale . It is a story of people who have had their lives disrupted and devastated, and are now desperate for a safe place to call their own. Breaking down the protective wall that each has built around them  is not easy to break down . Trust is a huge issue. The characters are described in a detailed, realistic fashion such that you immediately identify with them. You are no longer just a reader, you become part of these individuals' lives , feeling their every hurt, challenge and yes, even their despair. They became my dear friends who I wanted to reach out and extend my  love to. All of them are attempting to  escape a wounded past.Their hurts become your's. These dear ones strive to find hope and contentment. The road is not without its bumps!

The plot is well developed with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader glued to the page. My attention was grabbed in the first chapter and the world passed me by as I read this story filled with trials. God can deal with a wounded past but only if we allow Him to carry out his plan. He is able to  bring restoration and life of joy but the path to do so is a hard one.

This book is the first in a new series, "Prince Edward Island Dreams". I will be eagerly awaiting the next book!! I could feel the ocean breezes as I sat and read this tale.

Definitely a five star book!! I highly recommend it.

              "The Imposter"
          By Suzanne Woods Fisher

Suzanne has done it again!! She has written the first book in a new series, "The Bishop's Family", that grabs your interest immediately. When I looked at the back cover and saw this statement, "A heart once deceived should not be easily fooled again", I just knew this story was another winner!

The main character, Katrina Stoltzfus, was confident that she had life and love figured out. Marrying John was going to produce a "happily ever after" ending to her childhood. However, as with most idealistic ideas that youth have, plans begin to crumble right before her eyes. Katrina's future seems doomed and uncertain. When a widow in the Amish community asks for help starting a new business, Katrina does not hesitate to offer to help. Her broken heart need to heal and she feels this will help her untangle her life and find a new purpose for her future.

The one thing that she doesn't need nor want is attention from farmhand, Andy Miller, who had arrived at the widow's farm just when he was needed most. The mystery is why is he there always at the right time and in the right place?? Andy just seems too good to be true. Katrina has been deceived once! She is determined not to  go through that heartbreak again.

As I entered this Amish community, I at once felt at home, back in Stoney Ridge. the setting for some of Suzanne's previous books. A quiet farming area with the Plain People living their faith. Alas, the reader becomes quickly aware that these wonderful folk have problems just as you and I have!! They are also human and experience pain, challenges , disappointments. The loveable, true to life characters, make their way into one's heart quickly, easy to identify with. Each has their own little quirks that makes them even more believable. One does not simply read this story. One LIVES it, walks in their shoes, if only for a brief time . Every disappointment , worry, fear and yes, even joy is felt. Suzanne's knowledge and understanding of the Amish is evident in her description of situations and characters.  Her extreme sensitivity is exemplified throughout the book.

The plot is one that has the perfect blend of events, some happy, some sad, even some maddening !  The underlying theme of all of the happenings center on the hiding of wrong doings. The past is always there. Our mistakes make one who they are in the present. Lies have been told, can we really call them just half truths?? Is redemption possible?? Of course, but only if God's plan is allowed to play out in one's life. As the story unfolds, the reader is shocked by the deceit of one in a position of authority. I must say, this plot is one that kept me thinking long after I had finished reading the book. God does forgive, but only if
one realizes his/her errors and changes . Can this apply to me?? Of course it can!! Are any of us perfect? NOT one!! But forgiveness is always available.
Suzanne's message is loud and clear.

I highly recommend this book to all readers, not just lovers of the Amish fiction genre. It is a very different kind of story, one full of surprises and mystery.
Definitely a five star book!!

Eagerly awaiting book two in this series!

A Message from Suzanne Woods Fisher:

If you think you have a pretty clear idea of what an Amish bishop is like—stern, authoritative, patriarchal?—have another think. David Stoltzfus in The Imposter is warm, kindhearted, a reluctant farmer, and quite attractive!
Sound like an unlikely character for an Amish novel? Maybe so, but David Stoltzfus is modeled after a bishop I met, years ago. This real-life bishop might be the most intelligent, thoughtful, spiritually sensitive, and well-read man I’ve ever met. We spent a morning talking Bonhoeffer in his Spartan living room, warmed by his woodstove.
I wanted to present the character of a bishop that best represented this man I’d grown to admire. So when it was time to create a proposal for a new series, I suggested ‘The Bishop’s Family,’ staring David Stoltzfus who was loosely based on this particular bishop.

Very loosely.
David Stoltzfus is a handsome, widowed father of six who runs a local bulk food store. His children are surprisingly nonconforming, outspoken, and fiercely protective of their clan. The real-life bishop is a farmer, happily married with four independently minded children, and looks…well, to be candid, he looks a little like Benjamin Franklin.
But here’s what they have in common: they both love to read, they love their families, and they love the work God has given them of tending a flock.
The Imposter begins as David Stoltzfus moves his family to Stoney Ridge for a fresh start, a new beginning. Things don’t start off well: his eldest daughter, Katrina, faces a crushing disappointment, his prodigal son Jesse has a bent for troublemaking, and then David realizes something fishy is going on in the little church.
A new life awaits the Stoltzfus family, but not the one they expected. Or wanted. But they are needed in Stoney Ridge, each one of them. Even Jesse. J
I hope you’ll feel as though you’ve made some new friends as you get to know David and his children. One thing I can promise: this bishop’s family will surprise you.

Happy Reading!

Warmly, Suzanne

"New Beginnings"
  By Pamela Jo

Synopsis:

Upon her return from her best friend Charlie's wedding, Victoria found that the beautiful city of Chicago had never seemed emptier and neither had her soul. She realized she was surrounded by all the people in the world and she still felt lonely. Deciding to take her friend Charlie’s advice and make a change in her life, she packed her bags and moved to the west coast of Florida. Little did she know that the young Amish girl that she met on the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico would begin a spiral of emotional changes for both of them.

My Thoughts:  I must admit that I am always a bit leery when asked to review a book by an author that is making a debut. What if I don't enjoy the book? What if it is poorly written?? Do I want to be the one to discourage someone just starting out? Yuck!! I do NOT want to be the one to cause an up and coming author to stop writing!!  All of these feelings ran through my mind, upon reading the request of Pamela Jo. I had loved a book that she coauthored with popular author , Sarah Price, so just maybe I can do this!!

"New Beginnings" is the first in a series, entitled "The Sands of Time". I discovered very quickly that I did not need to worry at all about reviewing this book. It started out well, easy to read and enjoyable. The only negative comment I have, is, it just didn't last long enough. I was reassured by the author that this story would continue in the next book in the series.

The characters are realistically and well described. It did take me a few pages before I figured out who was who, but I then found the main character , Victoria , someone with whom I could identify. The desire to find oneself and be happy with who you are runs throughout the story. Victoria does just that, as does her young Amish friend.

The plot evolves quickly and smoothly. There are some twists and turns that keep the reader's attention. At times, I was completely surprised by the direction that the storyline took.

The setting is one that is well described and fitting for this theme of finding oneself, being thankful and following God's plan. The sunny beaches of Florida called to me as they were described. I could feel the sand on my toes and hear the sounds of the waves hitting the shores. I felt the hope and peacefulness that accompanies a day at the beach.

This book is an easy , enjoyable read, different in nature from the usual Amish fiction genre. I am looking forward to the next in the series!! Get writing , Pamela Jo!!

Another Winning Novel by Charlotte Hubbard!!

                                                      "Promise Lodge"
By Charlotte Hubbard

RT Book Reviews say "Hubbard writes Amish stories with style and grace." and  that statement certainly rings true in my opinion! This first book in a new series, won a special place in my heart, as I fell in love with the main characters and found myself living their lives alongside them.

Promise Lodge is a place for heaven sent second chances, giving those that need it, a better life, a fresh start . Three Amish sisters, Rosetta, Mattie and Christina have left their homes behind in Coldstream to start Promise Lodge, hoping to develop it into a haven for Plain People, including Amish and Mennonite women who may have nowhere else to go. These three woman have all have experienced misfortune in their lives and wish to help others in need, giving them a colony where faith's abiding promise is fulfilled and love can make all things new. The setting is described in such detail that one feels the peace and beauty of God's creations. I got to the point, when I really had a great desire to pack up and join these three dear ladies.

Synopsis From book cover:

Energetic widow Mattie Bender Schwartz is working day and night to get Promise Lodge going. She's also hoping the change will help her son Noah's heart to heal after his broken engagement. But his former fiancée, Deborah, is looking for a fresh start too. Filled with regret, and cast out by her dat for a reason she can't yet reveal, Deborah can only pray Noah will forgive her foolishness.

Deborah is the last person Noah expected to show up at Promise Lodge. But with her cruel words still ringing in his head, he's reluctant to accept her apology--even if the Old Order ways demand he try. If only he could obey Christ's most important commandment: love one another. But one thing is certain--his mother and aunts, and their beloved Preacher Amos, will do their best to help him get there.

Exclusive Excerpt from Book:

Rosetta Bender stepped out of the stable with a bucket of fresh goat milk in each hand, gazing toward the pink and peach horizon. Sunrises felt special here at her new home. She was grateful to God for helping her and her two sisters jump through all the necessary hoops to acquire this abandoned church camp. Its name alone—Promise Lodge—made Rosetta feel hopeful, made her dare to dream of a better life for her family and for the other Plain folks they hoped to attract to their new settlement. Even so, she let out a long sigh.

“You sound all tuckered out and we’ve not even had breakfast yet.”

Rosetta turned to smile at her eldest sister, Mattie Schwartz, who’d just come from the chicken house with a wire basket of fresh eggs. The sun’s first rays made a few silvery strands sparkle in her dark hair, which was tucked up beneath a blue kerchief.

“There’s no denying that we set ourselves up for a lot of work when we bought this property,” Rosetta replied wistfully. “I wouldn’t move back to Coldstream for love nor money, but I wish I could join the gals who’ll be cleaning at the King place this week, helping Anna get their house ready for Sunday’s service. And I’d like to be at the common meal with everyone after church, too.”

Mattie looked away. “So I’m not the only one who’s been missing our gut friends?” she asked. “In all the hustle and bustle of selling our farms and shifting our households to Promise, I hadn’t thought about leaving everyone we’ve known all our lives. Takes some getting used to, how quiet it is out here in the middle of nowhere, ain’t so?”

“Is this a meeting of the Promise Lodge Lonely Hearts Club?” their sister Christine demanded playfully. As she stopped beside them, she shifted a bouquet of colorful iris so she could shield her eyes from the sun. “That gorgeous sunrise comes with the reminder that the heavens declare the glory of God and that we should, too—and I for one will not miss plenty of things about Coldstream. Every time I saw that new barn out my kitchen window, it reminded me of how my Willis died because someone set the old barn on fire,” she declared. “I—I’m glad to be leaving old ghosts behind. Focusing forward.”

Rosetta nodded, because she’d sold the house where Mamm and Dat had died, too—but Christine’s tragedy was far worse than the passing of their elderly parents. The Hershberger family had returned home last fall to discover their barn in flames. When Willis had rushed in to shoo out the spooked horses, one of them had kicked him against a burning support beam and part of the barn had collapsed on him.

“And I won’t miss the way Bishop Obadiah refused to allow an investigation into that fire at your place, Christine,” Mattie stated. “God might’ve chosen him to lead our church district—and I understand about Old Order folks not wanting English policemen interfering in their lives. But Obadiah turns a blind eye whenever his son’s name is connected to trouble, too.”

“Isaac Chupp and his dat know more about that barn fire than they’re telling,” Rosetta agreed. “And while I miss the company of our women friends, I do not want to endure another of Obadiah’s lectures about how you two should get married again and how I need to get hitched now that Mamm and Dat have passed on.”

My Thoughts:

The characters are described in such a detailed and realistic manner that you immediately can identify with them. They each have their own special, little quirky ways that endear them to you. I only wish that I could meet these God fearing strong women! Their spunk and dedication to help others stick with their faith, even in the most difficult times is admirable. I must admit , I had to fight the dislike that built up in me towards one character that entered this place of peace. Neither peace nor forgiveness was visible in any of his actions.  The story speaks clearly of the ability to follow God in good times as well as bad. God DOES have a plan for each of us, a good one. He allows us to make mistakes but life never ends there, you always have another chance!!

The plot is extremely well developed and has surprising twists and turns, springing up at the most unexpected moments.  A sensitive topic is dealt with in a way that makes the reader stop and take a moment to reflect on life's challenges. It makes all of us  realize that no one is exempt from the problems and tragedies of life. The Amish community does not differ from any other. God fearing people have to tread the same hard paths as others. Faithful, believing followers often experience difficulties. God's promises to keep us safe and always remain with us, shines through this story. Unlike many books of the Amish genre, this one does not paint a perfect life. lt portrays a true look at possibilities that can occur in the best of homes. I highly respect the sensitivity of the author when addressing such problems.

This book is definitely a five star book!  I have read Charlotte Hubbard's Seasons of the Hearts Series , so knew that I would enjoy this one, however, this particular book stood out as one that has a great message for all of us! It is the BEST yet!!!

The Second Book in the Lancaster County Series!!! Don't miss it!!

      "Amish Sweethearts"
          By Leslie Gould

Synopsis:  (From back cover of book)

Can These Two Friends from Opposite Worlds Find Love?

They've been best friends for years, but as high school ends, Zane Beck can't help but look at his Amish neighbor, Lila Lehman, with different eyes. Her controlling father sees only one future for Lila, though, and arranges for her to be courted by an upstanding young Amish man. When Zane sees the two together, his plans for the future crumble, and he impulsively enlists in the Army, following in his father's footsteps.

However, the passing of years and the distance between them isn't enough to halt their now hidden feelings for each other. If being together used to be difficult, it's now impossible, especially with the Amish opposed to war. Zane's service takes a dramatic turn when he's sent to Afghanistan. Being on the front line and the reality of taking a life has him questioning whether he can continue to serve or not. But all choices have consequences--both his and hers. With Lila preparing to marry another, will these one-time sweethearts ever find the life together that they both still long for?

My Thoughts:

Excitement reigns in  my household when I see the mail carrier arriving and putting a rather large brown envelope in my mailbox! I had been rather ,,, no... VERY impatiently waiting for Leslie's new book, "Amish Sweethearts", as I read the reviews of others and knew that I was in for a fantastic read. "Amish Promises", the first in this new series was such a delight, that I just knew this one would also be a winner!! I was right!!!

Leslie Gould has once again written a book that engages the reader from beginning to end. Once I started this book, the world passed me by as I became part of the Amish community.  The characters are so realistically and well described that you  easily and quickly identify with them. You feel that you are once again meeting old friends as the characters from the previous book have matured and are now preparing for courtship and marriage. Lila became my beloved friend as she stumbled along on the rocky path of life. My greatest desire was to reach out, give her a hug and tell her that God would take care of all obstacles in her way. Zane and Lila's relationship takes you on a bumpy, emotional roller coaster ride. Just when you think the problems are working out, you take another plunge alongside them .  Turmoil is felt deep within, as  the reader travels along side them. Difficult decisions have to be made, ones that you would never expect an Amish girl to have to make.

The plot moves quickly with twists and turns constantly appearing. Just when the romance seems to be going well , another unexpected block appears in the way. Lila had such a great desire to keep her faith, but could she do it if she entered Zane's world???

"Amish Sweethearts" is a unique  and very different tale in the Amish Fiction Genre. Definitely not your typical girl meets guy, falls in love, type of story. Combining the Amish world alongside the military is certainly one that makes one wonder how these young people can resolve their challenges. Trusting God to take care of us in any situation is a theme that is carried throughout the story. He does have a plan, we just don't always know what it is or when He is going to present us with an answer to problems.

Definitely a five star book!! A real winner!!!

Another Fantastic Read by One of My Favorite Authors, Vannetta Chapman!

An Amish Proposal for Christmas  By Vannetta Chapman Synopsis: Her deepest Christmas wish will bring more than she imagined…in this novel by...
